North Foster Farm

June Update

One of our laying hens out on pasture

It’s been quiet here on the website these past few months, but not out on the farm. The grass has come back, the chickens are out rotating through our pastures, the brooder is full of peeping chicks, and the market season is finally here.

If we haven’t met yet: we’re North Foster Farm, a small family farm in Foster, Rhode Island. We raise chickens on grass, move them to fresh pasture regularly, and feed them grain that’s free of GMOs. We think that’s how chickens should be raised—and we think you can taste the difference.

This year, we’re proud to be selling our own pastured eggs and pastured chicken. Eggs by the dozen and Cornish hens are in stock right now. The rest of our lineup—whole chickens, boneless breasts, bone-in thighs, drumsticks, tenders, and wings—will be in our freezers later this week and available for purchase by Saturday, June 6th.

Heat lamps for now, but in just a few weeks, they’ll be fully feathered and ready for pasture.

You can find us at three farmers markets every week. We’d love for you to stop by, say hello, and see what we’ve got.

In addition to our weekly markets, you’ll find our tent at a handful of summer pop-up events around Warwick from July into September. We’ll share the whole schedule in a future update—check back soon!

And if you were ever curious: yes, the sheep and the chickens get along… mostly. This is Ivy, conducting a thorough inspection.

As always, we can’t say “thank you” enough. Your support is what lets us keep doing this, and we can’t wait to see you at market this summer.

We love eggs.

Over the years we’ve purchased all kinds of eggs from the store: inexpensive eggs, eggs called “free-range”, eggs called “cage-free”, and more recently, eggs called “pasture-raised”. Some of these labels sound better than others, but we eventually learned the truth about each of these categories. In fact, pasture-raised eggs stand head and shoulders above the rest.

At North Foster Farm, we proudly produce pasture-raised eggs. At night, our hens are kept inside a secure mobile coop. During the day, they spend their time on grass, enjoying fresh air, sunshine, and abundant access to clean water and fresh feed. They roam freely in a safe enclosure and enjoy grasses and insects—just like chickens are supposed to.

After about a week, when the “good stuff” begins to dwindle, we move them (coop and all) to a new spot in the pasture to start fresh. As a result, we have happy, healthy hens that lay healthy, delicious eggs.
